Newly Diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy

The Challenge: to Eat Well!...while on the restrictive renal diet...more or less.

Situation: I was recently diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy. I am currently stage 3 CKD and I have indeed been to see a nutritionist. I was a bit horrified by the renal diet...white bread, pie ? I have kidney disease, what makes everyone think I want to choke on trans fat and refined sugar?

Goal: To see if it is possible to create a meal plan that I can live with...literally, I'm not old, I'm young. This whole CKD has already statistically shortened my life. I'd prefer to not shorten my life more by eating white bread.

Purpose: This is my journal to post recipes, ideas, and hopefully an accomplished goal for me, not you - and if you read this and do anything against what your doctors and other medical professionals advise, it is your fault.

  1. Hi Sophie, I have recently been diagnosed with CKD stage 3 as well, although I have been diagnosed with Iga for a while. Sounds like you are handling the news well. The diet change is amazing, I look forward to using some of your recipes because coming up with new food that is low salt is hard work.

  2. Hi Daniel. I'm glad you found me. I took a look at your blog, I think I may add a comment to your biopsy story, just in case some poor soul comes across it before they have a biospy (I'm very sorry to hear you were one of the few that bled, mine went very well).

As far as my reciepes go, the chicken salad everyone in my family loved. The chicken chili I really liked and the stuffed peppers I thought were still missing something w/o salt, but my friend loved them (they may have just wanted to be nice). Do you have Mrs. Dash in Australia? If not let me know and I'll tell you what is in it.

Also, I often go to these two websites for ideas (they are not kidney friendly, but have great ideas for sauces and mixing flavors, etc):
    http://www.thegreenchiclife.com/
    and
    http://www.elenaspantry.com/

I also go to this website to get an idea of what I am eating: http://nutritiondata.self.com/ - no idea if the information is accurate.
